Simplifying cybersecurity: Deloitte and AWS initiative aims to streamline cloud transformation

As an industry event, Fal.Con has always focused on insights from the world of enterprise data protection, cyber resiliency from practitioners, thought leaders and analysts.

One of the big signals out of this week’s event was ConvergeSECURITY, a joint initiative from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Ltd. and Amazon Web Services Inc. By harnessing artificial intelligence, the initiative aims to securely accelerate enterprise cloud transformation efforts.

“As we move to the cloud, yes we’re looking for better security controls, we’re looking for better sophistication, but at the same time, we’re trying to simplify the management of it,” said Chris Richter (pictured), senior managing director of global cyber risk managed services for Deloitte Risk and Financial Advisory. “The easier it is to manage, the more simplified it becomes, the better you are to protect yourself from attack.”

Richter spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin and Dave Vellante at the Fal.Con event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed key themes in cybersecurity, including cloud adoption, complexity management and the role of AI. (* Disclosure below.)

Simplification amid complexity

The intricacy associated with modern cybersecurity is more critical now than ever. As hackers exploit the plethora of security controls and products that often clutter an organization’s defense mechanisms, complexity is an adversary’s friend, according to Richter. Another point of contention: businesses grappling with mergers and acquisitions or managing various identities and privileges become vulnerable targets.

“[Hackers] actually take advantage of multitudes of security controls and products,” Richter said. “It becomes a playground for bad actors to take advantage and go and swim between those silos of complexity and confusion to take advantage of organizations. And they tend to be really good at finding the weak spot, the weakest link, and exploiting that.”

As businesses transition to the cloud, Deloitte advocates a dual approach: implementing advanced security controls while simplifying cybersecurity management. This streamlined approach is not only more effective but also cost-efficient, Richter added.

A holistic solution

A collaboration between Deloitte’s cybersecurity expertise and AWS’ cloud capabilities, ConvergeSECURITY offers an integrated platform for security telemetry and analytics. This integration runs on AWS tooling and helps businesses reduce complexity, improve security efficacy, enhance business outcomes and optimize cost-effectiveness.

“ConvergeSECURITY brings the best of Deloitte cybersecurity and the best of AWS cybersecurity,” Richter said. “We think that shifting to the cloud, yes, it does come with risks, but at the same time, it helps clients. First of all, they have to go there, but it helps them achieve security at the speed of business — and it also addresses the main concerns that we hear from clients day in and day out.”

A significant highlight of ConvergeSECURITY is its utilization of AI. By deploying AI-driven tools,  the platform seeks to maintain an edge over cyberthreats. With a focus on long-term data storage, enhanced analytics and rapid threat detection, ConvergeSECURITY aligns with Deloitte’s vision of reducing the stress on chief information security officers while concurrently facilitating business growth, Richter added.
