In a world that’s increasingly dominated by software, the role of open source in shaping the technology landscape continues to grow.

To keep up, open-source giants are reshaping the future of cloud-native environments and telecommunication with evolving products and solutions. SUSE Group is one of these companies; its technology assembles the Linux kernel and other open-source components into a stable, full-featured Linux operating system.

“A lot of our conversations are about that modernization to cloud-native,” said Brent Schroeder (pictured), global chief technology officer at SUSE. “But then also companies have a tremendous amount of traditional still in play. That’s not going away for years. So, we’ve got to provide both. How do we secure it? How do we make it enterprise ready? That’s really the focus.”

Schroeder recently spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and Rob Strechay at HPE Discover, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the nuances of open-source technology and its relevance today, as well as SUSE’s recent developments, particularly in the edge computing space, and how the company is redefining its approach to cloud-native environments and evolving telecommunications. SUSE and HPE collaborate for edge-to-cloud solutions

As open-source solutions like Kubernetes and Linux become foundational to the industry, and as cloud-native becomes more integral, SUSE has further strengthened its long-term alliance with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. The companies have been working closely of late, especially focusing on edge-to-cloud solutions.

“The last few months, we’ve gotten SUSE’s K3s as the default Kubernetes platform in GreenLake edge as a service,” Schroeder said. “We’ve got RKE2 as an option for GreenLake’s Private Cloud Enterprise. And then Rancher Manager is available to manage those. We’ve now made Rancher Manager available in GreenLake’s online market.”

Since SUSE’s 2020 acquisition of Rancher Labs, a market leader in Kubernetes management, there has been a strong following, Schroeder added.

Modern technology integration can present challenges, though. And as companies transition to cloud-native approaches, they still have a wealth of traditional systems in play, Schroeder pointed out. Edge technology continues to often be fragmented and disjointed.

“Edge isn’t an island. Edge is a continuum … connecting the edge to the cloud,” Schroeder stated. “Neither of them can … exist in isolation [any longer]. Our solutions are about bringing that together.”
